British Youth Sailing have opened entries for the 2021 Regional Junior Championships – a series of regattas all over the country that form a festival of sailing for youngsters. Many South Staffs sailors have attended this fun filled event other recent years and hopefully this year will be no exception, there is something for everyone whatever your sailing ability…certainly an event not to be missed!

This year the event is being held in the stunning Peak District at Carsington Water as well as great club facilities and wonderful surroundings there is a local visitors centre with lots to do.

After its successful integration as part of the first British Youth Sailing Regional Championships in 2019, the OnBoard Fun Fleet is back this is an ‘event within an event’ as part of the regional end-of-season celebration of all junior sailing. Its aim is to give the youngest or most inexperienced OnBoard sailors their first taste of travelling to an event, sailing at a different location and having fun whilst making new friends and learning new skills.

Although featuring some fun races, it is not racing and lots of prizes are awarded in line with the OnBoard character attributes, such as displaying teamwork, determination and communication. It’s ‘Games with aims’.

Meanwhile, the Regatta Fleet for coached racing is for more experienced youngsters who can sail around a triangle course and want to start to improve their racing skills. It is a brilliant learning experience.

The event is still also an indicator for those who do want to apply for BYS Regional Training Groups so there will be ‘serious racing’ Championship Fleets for each of the RYA recognised junior classes, both days.

Don’t have your own boat? No problem… If we can gauge early interest from SSSC Juniors keen to attend we can try and book the regional fleets for some of our juniors to use, these will be snapped up quickly so please get involved soon.

We are targeting the award for most sailors from one club again this year, so come along and #JoinTheAdventure
